Chapter 5

Holly was glad she’d brought Chandler with her to this meeting. They both had been briefed, and she knew what was going on as well as the four people, three of them idiots, that were in front of her. Department heads here at this hospital scamming their employees to get a larger bonus at the end of the quarter. She knew she’d been on the board here for quite some time, but it never occurred to her that she should be keeping up with this place as she did her other businesses.

The hospital wasn’t losing money. In fact, it was doing fairly well for a small-time operation. She’d seen signs all over town lately where they were opening up clinics, rehabilitation centers, and surgery pavilions. Even a pharmacy had been added to each of the establishments to make it easier on people. But these three idiots—no other word to call them—had decided to cut costs wherever they could in order to make their own personal profit a great deal higher.

When Quincy quit, it had been a cause for celebration on their part. According to paperwork that Sasha and Chandler had been able to find, they’d been working up to firing him anyway. Then, they’d hire him back at half his pay. Or something close to half.

However, what they’d not expected was that the entire department where he’d been working, the staff and a great number of the townspeople, would drive the extra thirty minutes to a hospital in another county. Not only did their profits suffer badly with that move in only a few days, but the townspeople were making the hospital directors’ lives, especially the emergency department head, a living hell.

From what Holly had heard, Mr. Harmon’s home had been crap-smeared, which had made her giggle every time she drove past his house and saw the mess that had been done to it. His lovely bushes were mowed down to the ground. There was no bringing them back, what with the cold killing off the roots. And his staff quitting. His wife, Margaret, had been terribly upset about that. Then there were the flyers, hundreds of thousands of them, papering his yard, home, even his trees, that stated what an ass he was in letting the best doctor ever go.

But the one that had given her the most laughter was the fact that his entire staff of nurses and staff alike had basically gone on strike. Work morale had hit an all-time low. The kitchen staff would give him the worst choice of menu items. No matter what he picked out to have to eat, the entire meal would be covered in thick grease. He’d finally had to give up and bring his meals from home, which he had to make himself as there was no one there to help him.

“Mr. Harmon, I’m here on behalf of the board members of Mercy General Hospital regarding the threat and attempted murder of Doctor Quincy Bishop and his wife, Grace Stone Bishop, while they were on their honeymoon this past week.
